At least with their (images) coming in no larger than the page, one can easily grab a handle and resize as one wishes. That is little different from, and no more onerous than, dragging to size when importing.

It is not possible to place the image at its original size just by dragging it out, it takes several steps:
  1. Open the Transform Tab
  2. Set the top left corner of the placed image as the origin
  3. Select "Lock Aspect Ratio"
  4. Type 100% in the horizontal or vertical scale field.

Images should always be placed at their original size, there is no need for any option. The option to drag them to any size has always existed.

A user would only want images resized automatically to fit the page width or height is if they intended to use edge to edge printing. In most cases one would want to resize the image within the margins. One can do that by resizing by dragging, or by cropping after placing an image at its original size.

If you forget to drag images to size on placing them, its not difficult to resize them. Use zoom to current or zoom to selected, and drag them to the size that you want.

On the Import Picture dialogue, there are two options: “Place at native DPI” and “Place at 96 DPI.”

If the image would be larger than the page when placed, neither of these settings are respected, which is a bug. If an image would fit across facing pages, it is resized to fit half of the spread, which is another bug.
