The telephone support scam, in the UK, is relatively well known. A phone call allegedly from Microsoft, Your ISP, BT or similar telling you that you have a virus, offering to sort it out by accessing your PC, the demand for money.
Last week I saw a nasty twist. The scammers had access to the computer, the householder realised something was wrong but did not instantly cut the access. The result was the scammers turned off most services and start up programs but left a .bat file behind to run on start-up that turned on enough to re-establish the remote contact. Now something was clearly wrong and the "mark" more likely to pay.
